| | National Validation Study of Competencies For Frontline Supervisors and Direct Support Professionals - This study examined organizational workforce outcomes; characteristics of and differences between managers, Frontline Supervisors (FLS) and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs); and workplace competencies, training needs, and timing of training for FLS and DSPs. Using survey methodologies, the study validated nationally the results of two comprehensive Minnesota analyses of competencies needed by DSPs and FLS, extending the existing analyses by sampling direct support professionals (DSPs), first-line supervisors (FLS) and managers in 77 agencies in five states. | | 2010 FAST Family Support Survey: National Results (PDF) - The Family Advocacy and Support Training (FAST) project was funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. The FAST project was designed to develop and test resources to assist families of youth and young adults with disabilities through the transition from school to adult life. Its curriculum development and training components focused specifically on people who were ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. This report summarizes the results of a 2010 national internet survey of 2,416 parents or relatives of children and youth ages 11 years to 39 years with disabilities from 54 states or U.S. territories. This report describes key information needs, unmet service needs, and service quality for youth and young adults with disabilities in transition from school to adulthood (defined for this effort as ages 12 to 22 years). | | 2010 FINDS National Survey (PDF) - In 2010 The Arc of the United States conducted a national internet survey that aimed to capture the perspectives of people with ID/DD and their family caregivers. The Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports (FINDS) survey focused on issues including educational, housing, employment and support needs of people with ID/DD and their families. More than 5,287 family respondents participated in the survey; of these, three-quarters shared their home with a person with ID/DD. Overall, 95% of respondents were parents, siblings, children, grandparents or other relatives of a person with ID/DD. This is the technical report for that project. | | An Independent Assessment of the Region 10 Quality Assurance Commission (PDF) - Beginning in 1995, a group of community stakeholders in Southeast Minnesota began to explore community initiatives to improve services. One of these initiatives received Legislative authority and funding to plan, design, and implement a new outcome-based quality assurance system for community services. This plan created and granted the “Region 10 Quality Assurance Commission” the authority to serve as the regional quality assurance and licensing entity for Region 10 counties wishing to implement a program of outcome-based quality assessment. Volunteers of America (VVOA) of Greater New Orleans, provide rich descriptions of why they continued to work at VOA throughout the Katrina and Rita experiences.  | Direct Support Professional Recruitment Toolkit (brochure) (PDF) - The Direct Support Professional Recruitment Toolkit arms individuals, families, consortiums, and organizations with the marketing tools they need to attract and recruit quality staff into direct support roles. Traditional sources for employee recruitment including newspaper ads, brochures, and flyers, have frequently been generic and flat. This tool changes that approach into a dynamic and targeted recruitment campaign for human service agencies and those who direct their own supports.
Target Marketing Target marketing is essential to attract the quality staff you desire. Although many employers are aware of what target marketing is, they find it difficult and time consuming to create a different marketing campaign for the different groups of people they wish to attract for employment. The targeted groups include: stay at home moms/dads, college students, Gen-Yers, seniors, faith-based communities, Spanish-speaking communities, and displaced workers.

Training Resources, Guides & Curricula| | DSP Apprenticeship Program - The National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) and the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) have recently updated the new and improved Direct Support Professional Apprenticeship Standards Program. This newly approved Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program addresses the need for a quality, competency-based model of instruction to educate direct support professionals (DSPs) and promote opportunities for advancement and career pathways in this workforce. The DSP Apprenticeship Model provides a structure for the development of quality educational programs that can be tailored and implemented across the nation to meet state and regional needs. The Direct Support Professional Apprenticeship Program expressly requires training focused on supporting people with disabilities to live healthy and active lives in their communities. It also aligns closely with the requirements for the NADSP Credentialing Program.
